With fall allergies approaching it might be a good time to address the dirt still surfacing in your home’s air vents. Follow these easy steps to bring that crisp fall air back into your home!
Step 1: 1- Turn off your A/C. You don’t want it turning on while the vents are off!
Step 2: Remove all floor, ceiling and return air vents. You might need a screwdriver for the return vents.
Step 3: Put them all in the bathtub in warm water. Add a few drops of dish soap to the water and let the bubbles build up. The dish soap will help cut in grease and grime that has built up on the vents. Let the vents soak for about 10 minutes.
Step 4: Using a scrub brush, give each vent a good washing. Be sure to scrub both sides. If you are like me, your daughter puts stickers on her air vent, so I had to scrub those off.
Step 5: Drain the bathtub and then rinse each vent under warm water. This is where a detachable shower head could come in really handy.
Step 6: Shake off any excess water and lay vents out to dry on a towel for a few minutes. They don’t have to be perfectly dry when you put them back in their spots because once you turn your furnace on again, that warm air coming through will help dry up any remaining water.
Step 7: And voila! You have some clean vents! I bet you didn’t realize how dirty they were until now!
That was all pretty easy, right? From beginning to end, it took us about 20-25 minutes and most of that was soaking time. Something this small can make a big difference in your house!
